Mahaleb (Prunus mahaleb)

The Mahaleb is a small cherry tree that grows wild in Mediterranean countries and West Asia. The tree’s deep-reaching roots that are adapted to drought give the species a commercial agricultural value. The tree is seasonal. Its leaves turn an attractive yellow in autumn before they drop in winter, unveiling the tree’s smooth, grayish bark, and many spreading branches. In spring, leaves and flowers start growing at the same time. The leaves are oval, shiny, and finely toothed around the edges, while the flowers are small, white, and pleasantly fragrant. The Mahaleb produces small cherry-like fruits that turn dark purple as they mature. The fruit is bitter, and it is liked and eaten by birds but not by humans. When ground into a powder to produce the mahaleb spice, Mahaleb seeds have an important commercial value. There are very few Mahaleb trees left in Lebanon, with the few remaining specimens found in Ehden Reserve.

المحلب شجرة كرز تعيش في البراري في دول المتوسط و غرب افريقيا. جذورهت التي تذهب بعيدا في الارض تجعلها تتكيف و التربة الجافة و تعطيها قيمة زراعية يستفاد منها تجاريا. يصل طول الشجرة الى 4 امتار، تتميز بأصفر جذاب تتلون به أوراقها في الخريف التي تتساقط في الشتاء. في الربيع، الاوراق و الازهار تنمو معاً. اوراق المحلب بيضاوية الشكل و لماعة و ذات اطراف مسننة بدقة، اما ازهارها فهي بيضاء و صغيرة الحجم تفوح بعطر لذيذ. تنتج شجرة المحلب كرزا صغيرا يصبح لونه قرمزيا داكنا عند نضوجه و طعمه مر فلا يرغب احد بأكله الا انه يجذب الطيور. لبذور المحلب منفعة تجارية اذ انهاتطحن و تشكل بهارا ذا طعم مزدوج يجمع المرارة و الحلاوة معاً. في لبنان اشجار المحلب المتبقية قليلة و لا تتواجد الا في محمية اهدن الطبيعية

الاستعمالات: جذرا ارضيا لتطعيم انواع اخرى من الاشجار المثمرة كالكرز و الخوخ و المشمش، لانتاج بهار المحلب الذي يستعمل في الحلويات، عينة، للحياة البرية، شجرة محلية، صالحة للاكل
